Rachel Smith Watson

October 18, 1920 - May 25, 2022

Rachel S. Watson, October 18, 1920-May 25, 2022 of Albany, GA, passed away in her home on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors. The Rev. Chuck Knight of Porterfield United Methodist Church will officiate. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends beginning at 1 PM at Kimbrell-Stern. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, James Carl Watson, and her sister, Bina Lou Gammage. She was born in Cedar Springs, GA, daughter of the late Thomas Homer Smith and Callie Wiley Smith. Mrs. Watson graduated from Andrew College and, later went on to earn her Masters in Education through the University System of Georgia. She was a dedicated teacher, and taught the fifth grade at Lake Park Elementary School. Serving as an educator for decades, she had the privilege and opportunity to guide and touch the lives of the children she taught. She had been a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist since the early 1960’s, and was a member of her Sunday School Class and the Methodist Women’s Circle 12. Mrs. Watson was a loving mother and considered seeing her children grow up the happiest years of her life. She was an excellent cook—and an avid gardener with a green thumb. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed fresh water and deep-sea fishing in her earlier years. Mrs. Watson is survived by her daughter: Carla Watson Stoutamyer (Jeff), Atlanta, GA; son: Joseph “Joe” Thomas Watson, Chattanooga, TN; nieces: Sara Ginter (Dan), Columbus, GA and Jane Rice (Randy), Charleston, SC, as well as many nieces and nephews from her husband’s side of the family. Those desiring may send memorials to Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road, Albany, GA 31707. You may sign the online guestbook at www.kimbrellstern.com.
