Mary Flowers Johnson

Mary Flowers Johnson, born April 14, 1945, to George and Christine Flowers, passed away peacefully during the early morning of April 5, 2025—just 5 days shy of her and Dad’s 60 th wedding anniversary and 9 days prior to her 80 th birthday. Her funeral service will be on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at 2 PM at the graveside at Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Roger Morey will officiate. The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 5-7 PM. Being the only two girls of 7 children, Mom and her sister, Reba, formed a tight bond as sisters, allies and best friends. Mom and Reba attended Albany Vocational School for Cosmetology and worked as a Licensed Beautician for many years. She and Reba learned to square dance in their 40’s, and having always had a beautiful singing voice Mom decided she wanted to be a square dance caller. Unfortunately, at that time most dancers in the Albany area were not very welcoming of a female caller and she faced many challenges in getting her start as a caller. Dad told her if she would start her own square dance club and teach a beginner’s class, he would take her class and learn to dance. This was the start of the Wheel-A- Rounds Square Dance Club in Albany, which ironically became the largest club in Albany and the last square dance club in this area. Mom taught many people in the Albany area how to square dance during her 30-year tenure as a caller. She and Floyd traveled all over the country dancing and calling and even participated in a square dance cruise. Mom also loved singing in the church choir and singing solos for her church. Many of you may not know she was a talented seamstress. She made many square dance and clogging outfits for herself, Susan and me, and also made ties and western-style shirts for the guys. She said her hardest sewing project was in 1995 when she made my wedding dress. Mom enjoyed Braves baseball, camping, and loved to cook and have her family together for holidays. Despite how tired she was or how much pain she may have been in, she always insisted on cooking the majority of the dishes for holiday meals. Mom was a member of Faith Baptist Church and served for many years in the Kitchen Ministry. Although Mom loved square dancing and her other hobbies, her greatest joy came when she was called “Nana”. She loved and spoiled her two grandchildren and was their biggest fan during any activity they participated in. During the last 5 years she, Dad and Reba traveled many miles to watch Ashlyn play softball. She was so proud of both Drew and Ashlyn and would do anything they asked if it made them happy. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Johnson; her parents; her brothers – Lavon Flowers, G.W. Flowers, Frank Flowers, Melvin Flowers and Billy Flowers, and her mother and father-in-law Floyd Sr. and Violet Johnson. Mom is survived by her husband of 60 years, Floyd H. Johnson, Jr.; daughter Kay Johnson Standley (Shel) of Sasser; grandchildren Drew Standley and Ashlyn Standley of Sasser; her sister and best friend for almost 80 years Reba Flowers Cooper; and her fur baby Angel. We believe what God tells us in Revelations, and although our hearts are heavy here on earth, we are comforted knowing her pain, sickness and worry are gone. I hope the Baptist in Heaven are ready, for they are about to learn how to praise God through dancing!
