Kathryn Gaines Obituary

Kathryn Wright Gaines, 89, resident of Perfect Care in Americus, Georgia, died Wednesday, November 29 at Sumter Regional Hospital.The funeral will be held in Rome, Georgia on Monday, December 4. The family will accept friends at Jennings Funeral Home in Rome from 1:00 p.m. � 2:30 p.m. prior to a 3:00 p.m. graveside service at Eastview Cemetery. The family will also accept friends at the home of Dr. and Mrs. John Burns, 2308 Wallington Drive, Albany.Mrs. Gaines, born on December 16, 1916, to Leah Blankenship Wright and Allen L. Wright of Gordon County, had been a life long resident of Rome, Georgia. Seven years ago she moved to Albany, Georgia to live with her only daughter and family. Her survivors include her daughter, Joan Gaines Burns (John), granddaughter, Joan Marie Burns Barcus (Jay), and two nephews, Jerome and Wyatt Webb.While a resident of Rome, Mrs. Gaines was very active in her church at the First Baptist Church of Shannon where she was a member of the choir, WMU, and served as a Sunday school teacher. As a businesswoman, Mrs. Gaines and her late husband of 62 years, James E. Gaines, owned Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio as well as a local grocery store.While a resident of Albany, Mrs. Gaines attended Porterfield United Methodist Church with her family, where she was a member of the Hancock Sunday School class and Jesus 3:16 class. She also attended the XYZ Senior Adult Ministry and UMW Circle.Mrs. Gaines had many hobbies that included crocheting, quilting, china painting, playing Rook and traveling throughout the United States and abroad. It was while she was living at Perfect Care that her love for painting returned with the completion of sixteen acrylic paintings.The highlight of her life was being a friend and grandmother to her only granddaughter, Joan-Marie Burns Barcus, to whom she was known as Meme. Together they shared a special bond and relationship. Another special relationship that Mrs. Gaines had was with her only sister, Leila Ruth Webb, of Rome. Due to this close relationship, both Mrs. Gaines and her sister passed away on the same day.Memorials may be sent in memory of Kathryn Gaines to Porterfield United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road, Albany, Georgia 31707.
