Mrs. Edna Kathryn King McInvale

Mrs. Edna Kathryn King McInvale was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on April 24, 2017. Kathryn (“Kay”) was born on July 19, 1923, in Modesto, Illinois and is predeceased by husband, Joe B. McInvale, and parents, Frances S. King and William King. Kay lived on their Illinois farm with her parents until she was two-years old, before moving to Georgia where her Dad worked for Georgia Power. She completed elementary school in Tifton, GA, after which her family moved to Chattanooga, TN. She returned to Georgia her sophomore year of high school and graduated in 1941 from Athens High School in Athens, GA. After graduation, she attended college in Milledgeville for one year. When war broke out, Kay decided to go to nursing school in St. Louis, Missouri at St. Luke’s from 1942-45. She returned to Georgia after nursing school, where she worked in a small private hospital in Montezuma, GA. While working in Montezuma, GA, Kay met her future husband, Joe B. McInvale, at a dance in Cordele, GA, while he was home on leave from the Navy. They were married on October 3, 1946, in LaJola, CA, and moved to San Diego where Joe was stationed. While in California, Kay worked as a nurse at Script’s Clinic in LaJola and then at the Ryan Aeronautical plant until expecting their first child. Kay was a busy mother to four daughters and a supportive Navy wife for the next 30 years. When her two youngest daughters started high school and the two oldest daughters were in college, Kay went back to nursing at Phoebe Putney Regional Hospital in Albany, GA where her husband was stationed. After her retirement from nursing in 1976, she continued as a volunteer at Phoebe Putney until 2006. Kay enjoyed playing bridge, going to the beaches in Florida, and living at Lake Blackshear, GA where she and Joe lived after his retirement from the Navy. Their annual family reunions held at the lake on Memorial Day became a long-standing family tradition. Kay has lived at Arbor Terrace in Marietta, GA since April 2012. She is survived by her brother, William (“Bill”) King, Jr.; four daughters, Donna (Brad) Pruden, Vivianne (Ronnie) Waldron, Peggy McInvale, Carol (Reed) Blackwell; five grandchildren, Brian DuPree, Meredith Pruden, Kathryn (Chris) Deariso, Christopher Blackwell, David (Jess) West; and seven great-grandchildren, Kaine Baker, Laura Kathryn DuPree, Madison DuPree Dopson, Giana, Brooklyn, Alex and Ava West. Kimbrell Stern Funeral Home in Albany, GA will be handling arrangements. The viewing will be on Monday, May 1st from 6:30-8:30 PM. Funeral will be in the chapel of Kimbrell Stern on Tuesday, May 2nd at 10:00 AM with burial at Andersonville National Cemetery.
