Carol Symons Hawk Obituary

Carol Symons Hawk, formerly a longtime resident of Albany, GA, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Magnolia Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert E Hawk and is survived by her four daughters, Evelyn Hawk-Ruiz, husband Sergio, daughters Edith and Carolina; Claudia Bullington, husband Victor, and children Elliott, Sam, and Claire; Annabelle Durand, husband Chris, sons Brian and Kevin; and Hilda Hawk, husband Dusty Holden, daughters Beth and Frances as well as by her brother Alan G (Gart) Symons of Elberta, AL and his children Leigh Symons Edwards and Stephen Symons.Our dear mother, Carol Hawk lived a very full life not only as a loving mother to her daughters, a loving wife to Herb, and a loving caregiver to her mother, Willie Symons, to her cousin, Bessie McAssey and her Mother in Law, Hazel Hawk, but she also found the time to be involved in so many volunteer activities. When she moved to Albany she joined Porterfield United Methodist Church (UMC) and began teaching second grade Sunday School. She became active in the United Methodist women (UMW) as well as becoming involved with the youth activities at Porterfield, chaperoning many camping trips along with her husband Herb Hawk. Her work for the UMW expanded into district level opportunities, and she provided her leadership skills for several boards including the Wesley Glen Ministries, Vashti and the City Missions Board, just to name a few.In the community, she worked for the Flint River Girl Scouts receiving the highest honor of the Girl Scouts, the Thanks Badge II award, for her work. She worked for the U.S. Census. She and Herb were involved in the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) while the girls were in school and for some years after they had graduated. She volunteered at Theatre Albany, Albany Hospice , Meals on Wheels, and the Albany Symphony. She was picked by WALB-TV as one of the Ten Who Make a difference. The Exchange Club of Albany awarded her the Golden Deeds award in 1999. Carol had so many talents and her greatest joy was in providing support, inspiration and unconditional love to everyone she encountered. As one close friend of hers said, "She must surely make God tired." She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.Her family is grateful to Mattie Marshall Center of Magnolia Manor in Americus, GA for their kind and loving care over the past few years.
