Susan Ann Hinson

Susan Ann Hinson was born and grew up in Albany, where she graduated from Albany High School in 1966. She was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Albany. She is predeceased by her parents, Royace and Betty Hinson, cousins George Watson and Richard Brassell, and very special friends Marguerite Dodgen and Gracie (her black poodle). Susan’s mother encouraged her love of music, especially southern gospel groups. Susan was especially fond of Eva Mae LeFevre, talented yet grieving mother and member of The LeFevres, with whom Susan and her mother shared compassion. After the death of her own mother, Susan found a wealth of love and maternal wisdom in a neighbor, friend, and mentor: Marguerite (and her daughter Deanna). It was this saint who taught Susan so many life skills - especially how to be a great “dog mom.” Susan had fond memories of friends from the various neighborhoods in which she lived— downtown Albany, Dawson Rod, Edgewood, and Seasons Christian Care. She kept up with folks when she or they moved away and knew most phone numbers by memory. During the last years of her life, Susan was an active member of the Century Pines Retirement Community. Residents and staff alike knew the encouragement which radiated from her. At meals she often brought extra bottles of catsup, mayo, BBQ sauce, or ranch dressing to share with those around her table. Many of her neighbors depended on her for reminders and small favors. She always brought Pastor Eddie a bottle of water before he taught Bible study. She helped set up for bingo, ice cream socials and “butter bean auctions.” Susan knew the names of all the dogs and most of the cats in the community. Many already miss her cards and calls. She shared about local events as well as TV specials and ball games. From her boxes of assorted greeting cards, she encouraged the sick and discouraged, and celebrated the happy times of life. Susan did the same for her Sunday school class: calling, remembering birthdays and anniversaries, and constantly checking on those at home or sick. Susan was always ready with an encouraging card, call or visit for her many friends and family. Most importantly, she was a conscientious prayer warrior. Susan loved following UGA football and Braves baseball, and had a keen interest in the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame because of her special friend, Jimmy Shemwell. Susan’s greatest joys were people, her church, gospel music and her precious dog Chy Chy. In addition to Chy, Susan is survived by her special friend Jimmy and loving cousins Virginia Driggers of Henderson, NV; Linda Holliman (Chuck) of Boulder, CO; Laing Hinson (Enid) of Alexandria, VA; and George Watson’s wife Nancy of Athens, GA.
